The Bureau: XCOM Declassified available 23 August 2013

2K and 2K Marin, makers of Bioshock 2, have just set a date of release for their brand new game The Bureau: XCOM Declassified. Set against the backdrop of The Cold War, this game is focused on a sector of secret government known only as The Bureau. It was first formed to help the fight against communism and Soviet Russia. However, there are more deadly enemies out there than old mother Russia, and The Bureau will have to fight to protect the world AND keep it the whole thing secret, to ensure there is no world-wide spread of panic. What is this evil I speak of? Aliens.

This game gives the same feeling as Bioshock did; it harks back to days of record players, when the US was in the hands of JFK. You play as agent William Carter, and you and your team are on the frontline, battling for humanity, and keeping The Bureau’s secrets at all costs. It’s a third person shooter, and you control what your team does as well as your own character. Just like in last year’s brilliant reboot, XCOM: Enemy Uknown, if one of your team dies, they are dead permanently, which is a nice touch and helps to build more realistic reactions to whats going on around you.

Christoph Hartmann, president of 2K said: “The game has evolved through a creative and iterative development process, and the result is a narrative-driven experience that is smart, engaging, and challenges players to think tactically.”

Morgan Grey, the creative director, added: “The team has been working hard to leverage core XCOM elements like tactical decision-making and permanent death of squad mates in a purposeful way that makes this a unique tactical shooter. To that end, The Bureau will challenge players unlike any other third-person tactical shooter.”

It all sounds very impressive, and I look forward to pictures and demos as the release date gets closer. The game is due on 23 August 2013 for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC. If you can’t wait until then, check out the trailer below.
