Review: Maroon 5 – Songs About Jane 10th Anniversary Deluxe Edition

Maroon 5 have re-released their debut album Songs About Jane, but this time as a special 10th Anniversary Edition which includes a bonus CD containing the demos of the original 12 songs on the album plus some previously unreleased material.

Songs About Jane still sounds as fresh and as up beat as it did 10 years ago, and that is a major testament to how good these songs are. They haven’t aged at all and if you were unfortunate not to hear them the first time round, you are in for a treat.

‘She Will Be Loved’ is without question the best song here, it’s head and shoulders above the rest, with its unmistakable simple guitar intro and the insatiable chorus. ‘Shiver’ is also top drawer and it’s almost a combination of blues and funk which is a fantastic rest bite from the normal ‘pop’ sound otherwise found here. ‘Harder To Breathe’, a rather rocky number, opens the proceedings and shows how good Maroon 5 are lyrically. ‘Must Get Out’ is a very beautiful love song, almost on par with ‘She Will Be Loved’ but the chorus just slightly lets it down.

The bonus disc containing all 12 songs of the original album in demo form is the true masterpiece here. Strange that may sound but after 10 years it’s exciting at how the songs have changed from the demos to the ones that graced the final record. These are not rough demos though, no bad chord changes or late vocals which is a shame as that adds to the appeal. However, you can still here how these songs have evolved from this relative early stage in development. ‘Take What You Want’, ‘Woman’ and ‘Chilly Winter’ are the previously unreleased songs here and what gems they are. All three offer something completely different to the main album; beautifully melodies, some amazing lyrics, all feel very fresh and showcase Maroon 5’s strengths in song writing.

Overall this is definitely worth a purchase if you haven’t heard Songs About Jane before as it is a great album, added with the bonus disc it’s a must have. However, if you have the original or not a massive fan than this Deluxe Edition is not worth a purchase, but if you are a big fan of Maroon 5 then it’s worth it for the bonus disc alone.

8/10
