‘Mad Men meets The Artist’ in new French rom-com Populaire

Prepare to be charmed by the newest French romantic comedy. Set in the 1950s, Populaire is a romantic comedy starring Romain Duris (The Heartbreaker), Deborah Francois (L’enfant) and Berenice Bejo (The Artist).

Rose (Deborah Francois) is a shopkeepeer’s daughter who dreams of escaping her small village and a lifetime of drudgery as a housewife. So, determined to make something of herself, she applies for a job as a secretary in the city, where she is interviewed along with scores of other girls by the charming former sportsman, and bachelor, Louis Echard (Romain Duris). However, lacking the necessary style and grace to perform the role  is a complete disaster – until she reveals she has a special gift as a speed demon on the typewriter!

Louis, seeing this as an opportunity to re-live his glory days as a competitor, employs Rose and immediately starts her on an intensive training regime  so she can compete in the country’s cut=throat typewriting contests.

Populaire is a chic, sumptuous romance with dazzling costumes that’s sparkling with Hollywood vintage charm. It hits cinema screens on the 31 May, check out the trailer:
