Feature: This Year’s Best Over-The-Top Special Editions Of Games
The run-up to Christmas is always a great season for game releases, and this year is no exception. With most of the big releases already out, gamers have new editions of FIFA, World of Warcraft, Halo, Resident Evil, and Assassin’s Creed that will keep them busy well into 2013. But what has really set the gaming world abuzz are some extravagant special editions that make the experience seem impossibly real. Here are our top picks for 2012’s best over-the-top gaming special editions.
Resident Evil 6 Leather Jacket Edition
The new Resident Evil had its worldwide release in October, but it started to make a splash way back in April with the announcement of its Premium/Leather Jacket edition. The Leather Jacket Edition weighs in as one of the priciest video games of all time, coming in at a hefty £899. And, you guessed it: the special edition comes with a replica of Leon’s leather jacket, as well as four special tablet covers. Originally only planned for a Japanese release, Capcom released an extremely limited number of premium editions in Europe as well.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 Tango Gaming Headset
One of the most anticipated games of the season was released this week, and with it comes a whole new collection of headsets that promise to enhance your Call of Duty experience. But the undisputed cream of the crop is the EarForce Tango Headset. The headset—which comes with a £299.99 price tag—have programmable audio presets, 5.1 Dolby Digital Surround Sound, WiFi capabilities, and dual-pairing Bluetooth, which means you can take calls and listen to music without missing a second of play time.
Halo 4 Limited Edition Xbox 360 Bundle
Looking to upgrade your gaming console? The new Halo 4 bundle sure is a beauty: the skin on the Xbox 360 is custom-made to include the Halo façade, and its two wireless, translucent controllers feature blue LED lights and rotatable key pads. The limited edition is already being resold for about £345, so you’ll want to act fast. If you’re looking for something cheaper, the limited edition game is £65 and includes access to nine maps and bonus content. Earn some cash to fund your new console by selling your old Xbox 360 online.
Assassin’s Creed III Griffin Bundle
The new Assassin’s Creed game already has three limited editions, but the best may be yet to come. The Griffin Bundle, which is set for release on 20 November, will include a pair of Adidas sneakers in American flag-inspired red, white, and blue. The new bundle was developed in association with Robert Lee Griffin III, a quarterback for the Washington Redskins. It will retail for between £104 and £123, depending on your preference of the Deluxe or Standard version of the game. If you’re not interested in the shoes, consider the Freedom edition of the game, which includes a 24-cm Connor figurine, George Washington’s secret notebook, an exclusive lithograph, two in-game single player missions, and an in-game multi-player mission. The Freedom edition retails for £110 on Xbox 360 and £120 on PS3.
